Dog Stress – 3 Tips For Happy Holidays

November 30, 2009 by admin

The Holiday Season is just as stressful for your dog as it is for you. There’s a lot of disruption from their normal routine – unusual smells, lots of visitors – not to mention all the decorations. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard people yell at their dog to get away from grandma’s heirloom ornaments. It’s easy to understand why your pet might seem anxious or unruly this time of year.

3 Tips to Relieve Your Dog’s Holiday Stress

We know you love your dog, so we’ve listed some ways you can help your pet stay happy and healthy throughout the holidays.

1) Create a ‘den’
Dogs will try to find a place where there is only one opening – where the perceived ‘danger’ can be watched. You can be their hero (and stay in control of your home) if you create this safe space for them. It can be as simple as an empty cardboard box with a blanket and their favorite toys.

If you want to get really creative, decorate the outside of the box . . . or let the kids do it. Make sure there’s no decoration on the inside of the box, though. The whole point is to give your dog a safe place with the familiar smells of their own toys.

If your pet likes to be where you are, put the makeshift den in a corner of the room where you’ll be spending the most time with your guests. Make sure your dog has a separate bed is in a quiet, out of the way room so they have a choice if they want to get away from the chaos.

2) Remember that your pet picks up on your stress levels
You might notice your dog having wetting accidents or showing other signs of being distressed or nervous. This is often caused by your pet sensing your own emotions. You can easily solve this problem by taking a moment to relax and calm yourself down, then speak to your furry friend in a reassuring tone. This short breather will do some good for your dog and for you.

If your pet’s nervousness or wetting behavior continues after the chaos of the moment has passed, you might want to have them checked by a vet. You never know what they may have eaten!

3) Keep your animal physically active
During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season it’s normal to think about skipping some parts of your regular routine. However, don’t let your busy schedule affect your dog’s regular exercise time. The normal exercise is important because it will help burn up the stress-related anxiety your dog is experiencing during the holidays.

Keeping this routine is especially important if you live in a cold climate. When the weather’s bad your dog’s walk is already cut to a minimum. Don’t make it worse by cutting out other playtime.

Common Signs of Emotional Distress

Look for these symptoms to determine whether you’re dealing with a training issue or a stress issue:

• Excessive licking
• Restlessness
• Scratching, clawing or chewing
• Pulling out fur/hair
• Defecating or urinating inappropriately in the house

With just a little extra effort on your part, you can ensure a healthy and stress free holiday season for your pets and for you.

6 Signs of Depression or Other Psychological Issues in Dogs

November 30, 2009 by admin

When Dr Joey contacted me, he wanted my help with his dogs. He had been putting up with really bad behavior from them for a long time. He was grieving terribly for his Forever Dog Friend, Satin, who had passed away. On top of that, his other best dog friend, Shami, had also recently passed away after a terrible and mysterious illness. He told me his heart was so heavy with grief that he just didn’t know how he could go on. His health was very bad (he was suffering from cancer) and he could hardly move because he was in so much pain.

To complicate matters, his remaining three dogs were out of control. They jumped on everyone, which was terribly embarrassing. They barked and would not quiet down, and they urinated in the house. One dog would go outside — then come back inside to pee! Dutchess was physically launching an attack on the front door anytime someone just walked by, and since the door was largely glass, Dr Joey was afraid she’d break the door and hurt herself in the process!

He couldn’t take them for walks because they would pull in all directions and one dog would have to be dragged along… terribly frustrating and dangerous for all of them. Plus, little Zena and Zoey were afraid to go outside. And, to make matters even worse, they had begun fighting amongst themselves. He desperately wanted them to behave and didn’t understand why they weren’t. He also worried that they weren’t happy. And because of the tragic loss of two of his dog companions, he was very concerned about their health. Recently, the vets had insisted that Zena needed knee surgery and he was terrified she would not survive the surgery. He just couldn’t face losing another dog.

After several holistic healing therapy and animal communication sessions, the dogs are much better behaved.  No more inappropriate indoor urination, they are happy to greet visitors more appropriately.  Dr Joey is healthier himself. And to-date, Zena has not had to have surgery as her symptoms are so much improved.

Without giving your animal a voice to speak what’s on their mind, we can only guess at why they are behaving the way they are. After all, who knows better how they are feeling? If they are in pain or discomfort? What works for them or doesn’t work? If something is confusing or frightening, and why?

Here are 6 signs of depression or other psychological issues in dogs that benefit from the services of a professional animal communicator and holistic healing therapies are:

1. Urinating or defecating in their home or kennel is a major clue that something isn’t right in their world. A dog’s natural instinct tells them not to foul their own den, and when they do, that tells us there is something seriously amiss. It could be coming from an undiagnosed physical problem, but it is most often an emotional or mental reaction to their caretaker’s distress and anxiety, creating an unstable mindset.

2. Aggression to others indicates that they are not feeling emotionally stable in mind, body or spirit, or are being mishandled, misunderstood or mismanaged. This is most often a response to their caretaker’s emotional, mental or physical distress which they then take and focus outward onto their world in ways that seem appropriate to them, from their viewpoint. Proper rebalancing of both parties is critical to resolving this issue.

3. Hot spots and chronic skin problems are symptoms of an underlying condition that has to be addressed and resolved at the root or source of the issue. These problems often come from a reaction to improper diets or treats, allergies, a buildup of acquired toxicity that overwhelms their system, a messed up digestive tract because of antibiotics treatments, parasites, lack of proper supplementation, or frequently it can be a symptom of vaccination side effects. It is also a very clear indication that their caretaker is experiencing too much stress in their world, which then bleeds over energetically onto their animal.

4. Lethargy or loss of interest in exercise, play and activities is a clear indication that there is something seriously wrong. Regardless of the animal’s age, they should always be interested in their surroundings and happy to engage with others. Pay attention if they aren’t. The contributing factors can include their experience of grief or loss (of a friend, human or otherwise, or even a favorite toy or object), sadness, or undiagnosed physical discomfort. Other factors can only be discovered by communicating with them directly.

5. Fearful or skittish behavior indicates they have lost their confidence. Allowing our animal friends to continue to live in fear is a disservice to them. What they are asking for is help in regaining their confidence, their sense of place and purpose. Improper management or training efforts that are largely misunderstood or not the right approach to them have to be examined and discussed, to come up with an appropriate training style that works for them. There can also be underlying physical distress that contributes to them feeling out of balance. And of course, we have to look to their human friends to see what fears or underlying anxieties they are carrying in their own bodymind that is contributing to the problems.

6. Physical health or pain problems often have underlying emotional, mental or spiritual components that may actually be coming from their caretakers issues. If this is the case, then you will take them to the vet and they’ll get misdiagnosed or worse, and you’ll spend a lot of money in vet bills. And you’ll be no better off than if you hadn’t gone, and sometimes actually worse off because the real problem got missed and now your animal has even more stress to deal with.

So what if the real issues in all these cases is something going on in you that is causing distress in your animal? Without communicating with your animal first, you’ll take them to the vet and maybe you’ll get lucky and it will clear up anyway. But the truth may be that it wasn’t ever about the animal themselves, it was about a problem with you that they were unable to express in a way you could understand. The bottom line is that if your animal is not properly balanced and stable in their own body, mind and spirit, or are not healing quickly and easily as their body is designed to do, then they may be picking up and carrying their caretaker’s own energetic imbalances.

To get the best long term result, we often have to explore deeper to discover the root of the matter. If we are imbalanced, then they will be too, because we and our animals are intricately connected in body, mind and spirit.

Are you wondering what happened to Dr. Joey and his bad dogs? I heard from him a few months later on the one year anniversary of his best dog friend Satin’s passing. Amazingly, he had been able to move his clinic that summer. And, he said his personal health recovery felt like a miracle. NO more cancer of the bone marrow. Plus, his dogs, Dutchess, Zoey and Zena were all doing fine – no more bad behavior. Dr. Joey said that his and his dog’s lives had drastically changed in our work together, and he had become alpha once again creating more stability for his household. As you can imagine, Dr. Joey was deeply grateful for everyone’s recovery!

How to Make a Paracord Dog Leash Using the Seesaw Knot

November 29, 2009 by admin

Paracord is a really great cord to use for braiding and knotting projects! It’s strong, durable and washable, too! The goal of this tutorial is to teach you how to easily make a dog leash with parachute cord by using the double tatted chain knot.

Supplies And Tools You Will Need

You’ll need a few basic tools to make this project. A C-clamp, hemostat clamps, scissors, a lighter, a flexible measuring tape, a dog leash snap and paracord.

Parachute cord shrinks by 10% when it gets wet, so it is very important that you preshrink it!To preshrink the paracord, soak it in hot water for 5 minutes and then hang it to dry.

To determine how much paracord you will need, the project length must be broken down into inches and multiplied by five. We are making a four foot leash with a five inch allowance to make a handle loop. Therefore 53″ X 5 = 265″. For making this leash you will need TWO cords that EACH measure 265″ long.

STEP 1 – Arranging The Cords On The Snap

Fold both of the cords evenly in half and run the loop of each cord through the eyelet of the snap. Take the loose ends of the cords and run them through the cord loops.

STEP 2 – Clamping The Snap

Clamp the snap to a steady surface like a table top The clamp will keep the cords from twisting, which can be very frustrating for the novice knotter.

STEP 3 – Making The First Knot

To make the seesaw knot, we will be knotting alternating half-hitch knots. Take the first colour of cords, bring it behind the second set of cords and through the loop that you have just created. Gently tighten up your knot. Don’t tighten too much since your work will start to twist if you do.

STEP 4 – Making The Second Knot

You will now take the second set of cords and make a half-hitch in the OTHER direction

STEP 5 – Making The Third Knot

Take the first set cord and make a knot in the same direction as you did with knot one. Keep knotting until you make a cord that is 53″ long. You can measure it with the flexible measuring tape

STEP 6 – Starting The Handle Loop

From the END of the knot work, measure out five inches and fold it over on the leash.

STEP 7 – Finishing the Cord Ends Part One

Find the closest spot where the first set of cords cord goes under the second set of cords cord. Poke the hemostat clamps under set two, grasp set one and pull it through. Repeat this for the second set of cords. Repeat this “back knotting process once more. Stretch the leash out with your hands, this will allow the cords to settle properly into place. Now trim the cords relatively close to the leash.

STEP 8 – Finishing The Cord Ends Part Two

*NOTE* The melted ends of the paracord get really hot and a hot plastic burn can be really serious. Please be careful!

With your lighter, place the flame as close to one set of the cut ends as you can. When the paracord gets all brown and bubbly, take the flat side of your knife & press is against the same coloured cord that is directly below it. Repeat this for the second set of cords. If the ends are a little rough and not to your liking, you can do another pass with the lighter.

Your leash is now finished, so you can go walk the dog.

Aggressive Dog Solutions

November 29, 2009 by admin

Many people, afraid and worried of the possible harm a bite could cause, are looking for aggressive dog solutions. But in order to find a solution to this ordeal, the reason behind the canine’s negative behavior should be understood first. This is the first thing to be done to successfully eradicate the dog aggression.  The signs of dog aggression, like growling, snapping of teeth, and nipping, can easily be seen. After observing this, looking for the reason must be the initial step.

While still young, puppies should already undergo the training to prevent the development of aggression. Engaging them in socializations, taking them for regular walks, getting them used to having many people or animals around, and training them through gestures and verbal cues are just some of the things you can do to prevent them from developing aggression. But in cases where the dog already shows signs of aggression, additional effort to solve the existing problem is needed.

There are instances when a canine becomes aggressive because it wants to display dominance. Dogs have the natural attitude of wanting to be the most dominant in the pack. This dog attitude could trigger aggression when people or animals come near the dog. Some dogs, due to their territorial instincts, become aggressive when there is someone intruding or threatening its place. Although this trait is useful when there are burglars or intruders in the house, most of the time it scares the people around.

To be able to solve this aggressive dog behavior problem, the owner must train the dog using gestures and verbal commands. Teaching the dogs commands like sit, stop, and no will make the training easier. The owner can also give rewards when the dog was able to obey the commands, aiding in eradicating the bad behavior.

When taking the dog for a walk or when there are many people around, it is useful to put leash and muzzle just to make sure the dog won’t be able to hurt anybody.

When the dog develops aggression out of fear a different approach should be taken. Some canines have been mishandled by previous owners or attacked by other dogs. These experiences are factors that develop fear-based aggression. The best way to eliminate this kind of aggression is to increase the dog’s confidence. Owners must spend more time with this kind of dogs. Of course, a lot of precaution is needed during these times. Owners should make their dogs comfortable and assured. They can play with the dogs, take them for a walk, and allow them to join socialization classes.

For some medical or health reasons, dogs can also display aggression. Pregnant or nursing dogs tend to be very protective that they act aggressively when people or other animals come near them. Understanding the situation and taking safety measures is very important. When it is observed that the dog suffers from other medical or health problems, it is good to visit a veterinarian to get advice or medication.

A profound knowledge of the dog’s condition is needed to know the best aggressive dog solutions. Owners should take more time and effort to help their dogs stop the aggressive behavior.

5 Star Luxury with Mammoth Dog Beds

As human beings, most of us can appreciate the true beauty and happiness of the simple things in life, like living without pain or getting a good night’s sleep. As animal lovers, most of us would like to provide these few little luxuries for our pets too. However, the reality is, we have limited budgets. With Mammoth Dog Beds, that need not mean that you have to compromise on quality. This company offers you a little slice of heaven at a very worldly wise price with their large range of dog beds for all types of dogs, whatever their needs.

Mammoth Dog Beds have been around since 1995. They really have stood the test of time, due to three main factors:

· Their amazing quality
· Their range to suit all types and sizes of dogs and any home decor you want the dog bed to fit into
· Their prices!

Design

So few companies consider how the dog bed is going to look in your home. That’s not a charge that you can accuse Mammoth Dog Beds of. Their range of fabrics, include different shades of leatherette and many patterns and colors, this is truly impressive. And to some extent, that is a small point, although not one considered by many dog bed manufacturers.

When it comes to the really important stuff, Mammoth Dog Beds are superior too. They certainly do not allow design to triumph over functionality. Whatever size of dog you have, Mammoth has a bed that will suit. Whatever position your dog likes to sleep in, it’s not a problem to Mammoth, who offer not only standard donut and rectangular dog beds which we expect, and in various sizes, they also offer a range of beds shaped like sofas. They look trendy in your home and offer full support to your dog. If your dog sleeps curled up, choose a donut. If they stretch out, choose a rectangular bed. Do they like to rest with their chin up? A sofa shaped bed is great for that.

Special Needs

Does your dog have a health problem or is he just suffering through advancing years? Mammoth offers a range of orthopedic beds with memory foam mattresses that give total support and comfort to your dog’s body, no matter what their size. You can’t underestimate that kind of an advantage when it comes to keeping your dog healthy and happy.

Of course, part of keeping your dog healthy, as well as the rest of your family, is keeping the dog bed clean. With Mammoth Dog Beds that is no problem either. It seems that this company has thought of everything. If your dog is incontinent, the waterproof covers of these beds are very practical. It also means that Mammoth Dog Beds can be used outside too.

The padding is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and can also be cleaned. The whole cover is treated with Scotchguard to ward off staining. Dirt shouldn’t be a problem with Mammoth Dog Beds.

Why Dog Breeders Choose Mammoth Dog Beds

It is no coincidence that Mammoth Dog Beds are known as the Number One choice among dog breeders. These are people who really know their animals and who care about them, wanting them to have the very best. Mammoth provides them with the very best in pet bedding, no matter what the size and needs of the dog.

Quality Counts

Whether your dog wants a sound night’s sleep or peaceful forty winks after lunch, he or she can get it most effectively with Mammoth Dog Beds. The quality of sleep your pet gets is important, particularly when your dog is elderly, ill, pregnant or a nursing mother. That is why dog breeders prefer to go to Mammoth when they are looking for dog beds. They know that the support they offer is second to none, especially with the memory foam or orthopedic options offered by Mammoth.

Size Matters

Don’t forget, when your dog is carrying pups, she is significantly heavier than normal. This puts extra pressure on any bedding and it may not support her as it once did and as it should. If your dog’s body is not supported well during essential sleep, even after short naps, your dog can awaken with aches and pains and a bad temper, just as we can if we fall asleep on the sofa in front of the TV or if our partner banishes us to the spare room for the night! With the superior quality of Mammoth Dog Beds, that should not be an issue.

Be sure that the size of bed you have is suitable for your dog when she is pregnant and/or has a litter of lively, squirming pups in bed with her. Mammoth offers a range of sizes in every type of bed so there really is no excuse for leaving her uncomfortable.

Hygiene

With their comfortable padding and 100% washable covers, Mammoth Dog Beds are even suitable through delivery. You don’t need to worry about anything getting messed up because you can just throw them in the washing machine after the happy event and your covers will be as good as new in a few minutes with very little effort on your part.

They are covered in industrial strength textiles and constructed in a way, which is built to last. You could actually think of Mammoth Dog Beds as an investment for the future, because it should be quite a few years before they need to be replaced, even when subjected to tough treatment by your dog and regular laundering by you.

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world as Mammoth ships their products to Canada, the UK and Europe as well as the US. Every dog owner or dog breeder can purchase this quality product for his or her pet. The shipping is fast and cheap. In fact, they often have offers on free shipping and handling. Now, not many companies can boast that, and certainly very few that offer the quality products that Mammoth Dog Beds do.

Choosing A New Puppy: 3 Factors To Consider

November 29, 2009 by admin

An important step towards a happy and long-lasting relationship with any puppy is the ability to meet your expectations and requirements to the puppyís personality and needs.

Children In The Household

Whatever type of puppy you decided to pick, keep in mind that taking care of a young pup involves the same amount of commitment and time that a young child needs, and sometimes more.

Having both together under the same roof requires constant supervision to keep them from literally hurting each other. Keeping a close eye at all times prevents roughhousing, pulling, biting, and any potential injuries to occur.

Most trainers and breeders recommend that homes with toddlers should not get a toy breed because of the risk of the puppy getting squeezed, dropped, or stepped on by the young child. However, if you already have your heart set on a toy breed for your child to grow up with, pick one with a gentle disposition and an easy-going personality.

Level Of Protectiveness

For most dog owners, a dog that barks when someone approaches the door is enough to give them a sense of security, just like having a living home alarm system. The bark of a small dog is just as effective in turning away an intruder as the bark of a large dog would be. Dachshunds and most toy breeds are excellent watchdogs. Terriers are also great for the job.

If you are looking for a dog that can protect you and has the physical appearance to prove it, think about getting a herding breed or a working breed. Dogs from these breeds are protective of their owners and have the looks that deter burglars. They are also highly skilled and easily trainable.

Time Spent

One of the reasons why dogs are such popular pets is because they are naturally social in nature, making them a great companion. Keeping this in mind, do not get one if you plan on keeping him out in the backyard all day long. This is especially true for puppies, since they require more supervision, more interaction, and regular training to be a more socialized and civilized member of the family.

The average dog spends at least eight hours a day, five days a week, home alone. Some breeds are more adaptable to this kind of living situation. Most terriers, for example, find ways to entertain themselves given enough space for them to roam around. The same is true for Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes.

Male Or Female: Which Puppy Is Better?

November 29, 2009 by admin

Which puppy makes a better pet, a male puppy or a female? The answer to this question depends on what you’re looking for. On one level, if you care about the personality and character of the puppy more than anything else, the gender shouldn’t matter. Your decision will be based mainly on how the puppy behaves and acts towards you and other people when you are looking at the litter.

On another level, if you want to find out whether a male puppy or a female puppy would generally make an overall better pet, then you’ll have to take in other factors, such as the size, temperament, and level of care.

Choosing A Female Puppy

Generally speaking, female puppies are relatively smaller in size and warmer in temperaments. There are, however, some male puppies that are just as affectionate as female puppies. Many puppy trainers and breeders recommend a female puppy to homes with small children. Some believe that there is some type of maternal instinct that exists in female puppies, a quality that makes them amiable and ideal for a household with children.

Do not let feminine problems such as heat cycles and bleeding steer you away from getting a female puppy. If you are worried that she will bleed all over your house when that time comes, consider getting her spayed, which is the ideal thing to do anyway. Once spayed, rest assured that she will not bleed a single drop. And with regards to behavior, female puppies can be just as challenging as male puppies, sometimes even more so.

Choosing A Male Puppy

Male puppies are a bit more difficult to care for at times than females. For instance, they are quite good at performing a disappearing act when a nearby female puppy is in heat. This can be dangerous to the puppy as well as create problems for you. Many male puppies have been injured or even killed when escaping their homes to search for a female in heat. Between moving vehicles and fights with other male puppies, it makes sense to also have male puppies fixed.

Male puppies are also very territorial over their property, including any of his “stuff” inside the house, his bathroom area, or even a female puppy. He tends to get very aggressive when he thinks that his property is being taken over by another puppy and is willing to fight to defend it.

Male puppies also display territorial urination by lifting its leg up as high as possible while urinating. This leg-lifting behavior is not a problem unless it occurs inside the house.

On the other hand, male puppies have tons of energy and a lot of fun to play with. They are more active and have better endurance than female puppies. This is probably why male puppies are usually chosen for jobs in law enforcement.

The Do’s Of Adding A New Puppy To The Family

November 29, 2009 by admin

Being a dog enthusiast and the proud owner of four different breed types, I just adopted a brand-new puppy for the first time in over three years. With all of the reading and education that I have done on dogs, dog training, health, nutrition etc., getting a new puppy brought me back to the basics. You know, the common sense stuff, the simple little tips that many of us forget.

Check out the following Do’s when a new puppy has arrived in your home:

1. Do shower your new puppy with lots of love and attention, especially if he is doing something “right”. Many new puppy owners wait until the dog has done something wrong before initiating some type of communication. Before you know it, the poor puppy only knows that you are nice sometimes but then yell at him for no reason at other times. By communicating with him properly, he will be able to decipher your actions and become more amiable at being trained.

2. Do provide your puppy with plenty of chew toys. You can make something from home or better yet, just take a stroll through your local pet store for some neat looking items that your puppy can chew on instead of your shoes!

3. Do arrange a comfortable, warm bed your new puppy. If he will be sleeping outside then either build one yourself, or have built a solid weatherproof doghouse. Be sure that there is plenty of room inside and that the climate stays cozy for the pup.

If your doggie will be sleeping indoors then you can choose from several arrangements that will be adequate. For example, you can make a rectangular wooden box that has a front entrance clear to floor level. There are also plenty of high quality crates and kennels that you can purchase. Many of these are widely available at most pet stores.

4. Do watch over your puppy whenever he is around small children in the house. It hurts to say it, but hundreds of puppies are injured or even killed every year because of kids roughhousing when an adult is not around.

Children do not have the carefulness and understanding of how frail and vulnerable a new puppy is. So when something happens and the dog gets injured, the only one to blame is you, for not being there.

5. Do provide a regular feeding schedule from the very first day your puppy arrives. For puppies that are under six months of age, 3 ñ 4 solid meals of balanced nutritional food will be perfect. Simply give him all of the food he can eat in 30 minutes. When that time limit is up, scoop up the leftovers and only leave out water until his next meal.

6. Do provide a regular bathroom schedule as well. Just like his feeding times are rotated, you should be taking your puppy out to his bathroom spot during the same times each day. This is typically done right after each meal and then every two to three hours in between. And don’t forget a late-night trip to the bathroom area. Your puppy will be sleeping for more than seven hours afterwards and if he wakes up with the urge to urinate in the house, he probably will.
